By now everyone and his brother knows the famous Albert Einstein quote: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results".
And while RK would not suggest those who organized the Sartirana event, or those dealers who spent their time, energy and money to participate are insane we might suggest they are stupid.
Now stupidity and insanity are very different malady but at the bottom they are somewhat similar because people who are stupid, and those who are insane, do things that are unproductive and without reason.
Anyone who believes the market for old, collector oriental rugs is flourishing, and anything but in a downward spiral, is a fool.
Just as anyone who thinks bringing a bunch of rugs, be they great, good, or mediocre, to a "castle" 150 km from Milan, Italy will attract hordes of buyers, or those who possibly might be interested in doing so.
And likewise anyone who thinks this is going to change yesterday, today or tomorrow is equally misinformed.
You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows, said the bard from Hibbing, Minn., and you don't need to be Einstein to see how interest in collecting old oriental rugs has shriveled and dried up.
RK has discussed the reasons for this, and they are surely not only the result of the economic conditions the world economy suffers. They are the result of piss-poor management, a charge which can be laid directly in the laps of the stupid, greedy and self-interested who sit at the top of the sinking hierarchal pyramid that is rugDumb.
Sartirana is a failure, few people showed up and even fewer sales were recorded. This is the information RK has received from enough sources to be confident in making such a proclamation.
Things will not change, and an events like this will never be genuinely successful again until rugDUMB learns the fact's of life.
And those are, in brief: to self-regulate, to enlist museums in showing and sponsoring exhibitions, to create an atmosphere of honesty and truth rather than disinformation and lies, to put the future in front of today's personal profit, to begin building databases of scientific analysis, and lastly to weed out the rotten apples that are at the core of its center.
So for all you dreamers and hopeful saps, who think tomorrow will bring back the "good ole days" of rug collecting, let RK be the first to pull the wool from your eyes and tell you that just ain't gonna happen until you get off your chairs, affect some change and quit thinking someone else is going to do it for you.
